Frequent questions
Do nurses earn less in St. Gallen than in Zurich?
Usually a little, yes. The bands are national: a registered nurse (HF/FH) starts at CHF 6,000–6,400 gross per month across 13 salaries, a FaGe (healthcare assistant, EFZ) at CHF 4,500–4,900. Eastern Swiss institutions sit in the lower half; Zurich and Basel-Stadt pay up to around 15% more. Set that against the rent: federal rent statistics (BFS) put St. Gallen well below both.
I live in Vorarlberg — can I work in St. Gallen as a cross-border commuter?
Yes. People commute daily from Vorarlberg into the St. Gallen Rhine valley. With an EU/EFTA passport and an employment contract the canton issues a G permit, provided you return to your residence at least weekly. To work at the bedside you also need your diploma recognised by the Swiss Red Cross (SRK) and an entry in NAREG, the national register. We take the recognition procedure over: we file the application and cover the costs. Whether, and for how long, you may already work at the bedside before then is up to the canton.
Are there nursing jobs outside the city of St. Gallen, and do I need a car?
Most of the canton lies outside it: the Rhine valley, Werdenberg-Sarganserland, Toggenburg, Wil and the Linth area, with regional hospitals, care homes, Spitex organisations, rehab and psychiatry. For home-care rounds through scattered settlements a driving licence is almost always a condition; in hospitals it is not. The S-Bahn regional rail follows the valley floors — crossing the hills takes longer than the map suggests.
