Working in this field

Why a hospital?

Medicine first-hand

You witness diagnostics, procedures and recovery up close – and understand connections you only learn at the bedside.

The road to specialising

ICU, emergency, anaesthesia, theatre: postgraduate studies start in hospitals, often co-funded by the employer.

A large team

Nursing, physicians, therapy and social services work hand in hand. You learn from many sides.

Allowances that count

Night, weekend and on-call shifts are paid extra – if you are happy to do them, you earn noticeably more.

Typical roles

  • Registered nurse (HF/FH)
  • FaGe
  • Surgical technologist
  • ICU nurse specialist
  • Resident physician
  • Physiotherapist

What a day looks like

A day in hospital

  1. 1

    Handover

The shift starts with the report: who is new, who goes home today, who needs special attention.

  2. 2

    Ward round

With the physician at the bedside: findings, treatment plan, patients' questions – your observations count.

  3. 3

    Care and admissions

Mobilisation, wound care, medication, admissions from emergency. No two days are alike.

  4. 4

    Discharge

Someone goes home, well informed and cared for. That is the moment you do this job for.

Frequent questions

Do I have to work nights in a hospital?

On wards, in emergency and on ICU, night and weekend shifts are usually part of the job and paid with allowances. There are also roles without nights, for example in day clinics, scheduled theatre lists or outpatient departments. Tell us what suits you – we filter for it.

Can I specialise from a hospital job?

Yes. Many hospitals fund postgraduate studies (NDS HF) in intensive, emergency or anaesthesia care in full or in part, often with a commitment period. We tell you which hospital offers what.

Are there temporary assignments in hospitals?

Yes, especially for float pools, holiday cover and staffing gaps on wards. An assignment is also a good way to get to know a hospital before you commit.
