The result: the country's highest salaries (median around CHF 87,800/year for registered nurses), preferred workloads and extras like childcare places or transit passes are negotiable.
Weigh the rent against the salary — Zurich's housing market claws back part of the premium, so many nurses commute from Winterthur, the Zürcher Oberland, Aargau or Zug; the dense S-Bahn network makes that routine. Beyond the university and city hospitals, psychiatry, rehab, children's and specialist clinics and the municipal nursing centres carry many of the roles. That density also makes an NDS HF — the post-diploma specialisation in intensive, emergency or anaesthesia nursing — realistic to plan.

How much do nurses earn in Zurich?
We work with CHF 6,000–6,400 gross per month at entry, CHF 6,500–7,500 with experience and CHF 7,300–8,500 with a specialisation (ICU, ER, anaesthesia, OR) or a specialist lead role — all across 13 salaries. Zurich sits at the upper end of these Swiss bands. Night, weekend and on-call allowances come on top and are set per institution; we ask for the exact rates before you decide.
Do I have to live in the city of Zurich to work in nursing there?
No. Many nurses commute from Winterthur, the Zürcher Oberland, the Limmattal, Aargau or Zug; the S-Bahn timetable covers early and late shifts comfortably. Night shifts are tighter — there a car, a parking space or a room on site matters. Before you sign, ask about staff housing, a transit-pass contribution and parking: in Zurich those visibly change what is left over.
I trained abroad — what do I need for a nursing job in Zurich?
Diploma recognition runs through the SRK (Swiss Red Cross) for the whole country — there is no separate Zurich route, and starting elsewhere gains you nothing. The SRK asks for German at B2; the recognition is then entered in NAREG, the federal health-professions register. Until it is through, employers can only grade you in an assistant function. Zurich hospitals, clinics and nursing centres recruit abroad regularly — we handle the correspondence.
