Frequent questions
I trained abroad — what do I need to work in nursing in Basel?
Recognition by the Swiss Red Cross (SRK) and entry in the NAREG register, both before your start date. Once you have an offer, your employer applies for the permit at the cantonal migration office. EU/EFTA citizens commuting in from Germany or France need a G permit, keeping their home abroad and returning at least weekly. You choose Swiss or home-country health insurance within three months.
Basel pays well — what is left after premiums and rent?
Work with the real bands: registered nurses (HF/FH) run CHF 6,000–6,400 at entry and CHF 7,300–8,500 with a clinical specialisation, gross per month across 13 salaries; FaGe healthcare assistants CHF 4,500–4,900 to CHF 5,300–6,000. Basel-Stadt sits at the upper end of these bands. What is left depends on your premium, night and weekend allowances, and whether you live in Basel-Stadt, Baselland or the Fricktal.
How much German do I need — and is Swiss German a problem?
Employers expect German at roughly B2, and SRK recognition requires a language certificate. Standard German is the working language in acute hospitals, and all written documentation is standard German. At the bedside in geriatrics, long-term care and Spitex (home care), many patients speak only Baseldytsch, the Basel dialect — most newcomers understand it within a few months. French helps in this trinational corner but is not required.
