What do nurses earn in canton Lucerne?
These are our Swiss-wide bands: registered nurses (HF/FH) start at CHF 6,000–6,400 gross per month, reach CHF 6,500–7,500 with experience and CHF 7,300–8,500 with a clinical specialisation — always across 13 salaries. FaGe (healthcare assistants, EFZ) start at CHF 4,500–4,900. Zug is about 20 rail minutes away and Zurich 45, and both are among the best-paying cantons, so ask early how your previous years are graded.
Where should I live if I work in Lucerne?
Housing in the city is tight and expensive; Sursee, the Seetal valley and the Entlebuch offer far more choice. The neighbouring cantons of Obwalden and Nidwalden tax lower and stay close. Check the timetable against your roster before you sign: if the early shift starts at six and the last bus leaves before it, connections matter more than rent.
Can I work in Lucerne without speaking Swiss German?
Yes. Handover, documentation and training run in standard German, and the Swiss Red Cross (SRK) requires a B2 language certificate before it recognises a foreign diploma; recognised professionals are then listed in the NAREG register. Understanding dialect still helps: in long-term care and Spitex (home care), and in valleys such as the Entlebuch, many patients speak only Swiss German. Speaking it is not expected.
