Can I work in Geneva as a cross-border commuter, and where do I pay tax?
Yes, with a G permit. Unlike the other cantons on the French border, Geneva taxes your salary at source and pays financial compensation to the neighbouring French departments. As a commuter you also get a one-time choice between the Swiss basic health scheme (LAMal/KVG) and the French system. Settle both before signing — these decisions can only be corrected within narrow limits.
What does a nurse earn in Geneva?
In the public sector, pay follows a cantonal scale of classes and annual steps rather than your negotiating skill; private clinics are not bound by it. Swiss bands for registered nurses (HF/FH): CHF 6,000–6,400 gross per month (×13) at entry to CHF 7,300–8,500 with a clinical specialisation; FaGe, the healthcare assistant apprenticeship, CHF 4,500 to CHF 6,000. Recognised prior years raise your step: bring complete references.
Is my foreign nursing diploma recognised in Geneva?
For nursing, the Swiss Red Cross (SRK/CRS) decides; once recognised, you are listed in the national register NAREG. Commuters from France usually hold the French state diploma, which goes through the same procedure. From a complete dossier, allow up to four months and at most CHF 1,000. Geneva institutions usually want the decision in hand before you start; without it, only assistant-level work at lower pay is possible.
