Do I need Italian to work in nursing in Ticino?
Yes. Handover, documentation and family conversations run in Italian. The Swiss Red Cross (SRK/CRS) asks for B2 in a national language before it recognises a foreign nursing diploma; in Ticino the language that counts on the ward is Italian. German or French help with continuing education and with private clinics serving Swiss-German patients, but they do not replace it. At B1, agree language support in writing before you sign.
Can I live in Italy and commute to a job in Ticino?
Yes — that is how a large part of Ticino's health workforce works. You need a G cross-border permit, applied for by your employer, and you must return to your Italian residence at least weekly. A diploma earned abroad still needs SRK recognition and a NAREG entry. Note that the 2023 Switzerland–Italy agreement taxes new cross-border commuters differently from those who already commuted; check it before signing.
How does nursing pay in Ticino compare with Zurich?
The Swiss band for registered nurses (HF/FH) runs from CHF 6,000–6,400 gross per month (×13) at entry to CHF 6,500–7,500 with experience; FaGe healthcare assistants start at CHF 4,500–4,900.
