SRK Recognition for Nursing Diplomas: The Complete 2026 Process

Jonas Benner

CEO & Co-Founder

Around 30 percent of registered nurses in Switzerland were trained abroad — in Geneva it's over 65 percent. Without SRK (Swiss Red Cross) recognition, however, the profession stays closed: you may not work as a registered nurse, and pay follows assistant-level grading. The good news: the process is clearly regulated and plannable.

Step 1: PreCheck — free and fast

The SRK offers a free PreCheck that clarifies within about four weeks whether your qualification is fundamentally recognisable and which documents are missing. Do this before you resign, relocate or accept an offer.

Step 2: The recognition procedure

From a complete dossier, the SRK decides within a maximum of four months. Costs are capped at CHF 1,000. EU/EFTA qualifications usually pass through more smoothly than third-country diplomas, where compensatory measures (adaptation course or aptitude test) are more common.

The language certificate: underrated and decisive

A minimum of B2 in the language of your work region is required — recognised certificates (Goethe, telc, DELF, CELI) are accepted. Our advice from hundreds of consultations: invest in C1. The difference shows not in the certificate but in daily shift life — and in the roles open to you.

Working during the procedure

Depending on canton and institution, transitional roles are possible — graded as care assistant or FaGe-equivalent. That earns Swiss work experience, a reference letter and often your future employer. We place such bridge roles deliberately and time the re-grading to your recognition date.

NAREG registration

After recognition comes the entry in the national register of health professions (NAREG) — a prerequisite for practising in many cantons. Your future employer checks this entry; we make sure everything is in place by your start date.
