Understanding RAI: Why Your Assessment Decides the Funding

Jonas Benner

CEO & Co-Founder

The Resident Assessment Instrument is part of daily work for many nurses in home care and long-term care — RAI-HC in the ambulatory setting, RAI-NH in residential care. It is often experienced as a documentation duty. In reality it is one of the few instruments through which nurses directly determine what resources a client will have available.

From assessment to care level to funding

The items recorded produce a classification, and that classification determines what health insurers and public funders pay towards care. Put differently: an imprecise assessment is not merely a documentation problem. It can mean a person receives less support than their condition warrants — or that the organisation delivers care it will not be reimbursed for.

Where the common errors sit

Under-recording is more widespread than over-recording, and it rarely comes from carelessness. It comes from documenting a good day rather than the range, from cognitive limitations hidden behind a friendly manner, or from effort absorbed by relatives never appearing at all. Understanding the instrument does not mean recording more — it means recording the right things.

Why employers actively look for it

For home-care organisations and nursing homes, a real share of funding rests on assessment quality. That makes professionals valuable who not only record accurately but can coach colleagues and shape internal standards. This is the point where an obligation turns into professional ownership — and often the first step out of purely hands-on care into a role that shapes how the team works.

What to mention in an interview

A surprising number of applications never mention RAI experience at all — it is treated as a given. It is not. State concretely which instrument you work with, since when, whether you onboard new colleagues, and whether you take part in internal quality circles. For an organisation currently building assessment capability, that is exactly the paragraph that moves your application up the pile.
