Career guide

Your career in Swiss healthcare.

From FaGe diploma to ward leadership, from foreign diploma to Swiss recognition: this guide condenses the most important paths, rules and lessons learned.

Career paths in nursing

Swiss nursing careers are permeable: FaGe EFZ → Registered Nurse (HF/FH) → clinical specialisation (ICU, ER, anaesthesia, OR) → ward and division leadership. Practical tip: many institutions co-fund further education — negotiate education clauses when you sign, not after.

Recognition of foreign diplomas

Foreign nursing diplomas are recognised by the Swiss Red Cross (registration in NAREG), medical degrees by MEBEKO (MedReg). Plan 3–6 months, longer for non-EU qualifications. Language proof (min. B2) is mandatory. We guide candidates through the process — and place transitional roles where legally possible.

The right moment to change

Your strongest negotiating position is while you don't have to move. Signals worth watching: chronic understaffing with no improvement, no development perspective, rosters that permanently work against your life. A discreet market conversation costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

Negotiating salary — with data, not gut feeling

Know your salary band (see the salary guide), factor in allowances and pension, and negotiate the package, not just base pay: education budgets, workload flexibility and shift models are often worth more than 200 francs extra per month.

Part-time, re-entry and second careers

Workloads from 20%, re-entry programmes after family breaks, moves from acute care to home care or practices: the talent shortage makes employers more flexible than many think. Those who state clearly what they need find models today that were unthinkable five years ago.
